Just watched a tv program on channel 8 featuring 2 small kids. Both below 10 years old but they're fluent in few languages.
The 1st kid is fluent in Chinese and English. At the same time, she's learning Japanese.
The 2nd kid is half French, half Chinese. His mum is Chinese and his mum made it an effort to ensure that her kids are fluent in not just English but Chinese and French also. The mum speaks to the kids in Chinese and the father speaks to them in French while the siblings speak to each other in English. Not only the kids are fluent in 3 languages, the mum makes it a point that they learn Cantonese from their grandmother.
If only more people can think this way. Nowadays, lesser and lesser people are even fluent in Chinese, let alone dialects. Everybody seems to neglect the importance of Chinese or rather, our cultural roots. In the end, we're Chinese. Won't be it be funny when others asked how come we don't know our own mother tongue well?
I'll ensure my kids will be able to speak at least 2 languages fluent and understand both dialects.
